Refreshing Watermelon Ginger Juice

I'm one of those weird-o's that likes water. Who's with me? But admittedly, sometimes, I want something more to stay hydrated.

So when the first signs of Summer first presented themselves towards the end of May, I figured it might be time to jazz things up a bit and find a new way to kick up my hydration levels. I came home that day, face-to-face with a quarter of a watermelon remaining and a beautiful hunk of ginger root.

Something you'll learn about me over time is that:

1) I LOVE ginger

2) I like extreme flavours – all the garlic! all the ginger! None of this "a pinch of that". Cater to your palette!

So on I went to blend up this quenching spicy goodness in my beloved Vitamix. As expected, it was as quenching and delicious as ever! You could even play with the recipe if you're not a big ginger fan by swapping in basil instead, or mint or freshly squeezed lemon juice. Okay, I'm salivating now.

But the point is, you want to keep your hydration levels steady throughout the day. It makes sense that water would play a crucial role in our body, given that humans are made of up to 60% water. Water is responsible for maintaining our body temperature, helps kidneys eliminate waste, supports digestion and helps to carry all of those wonderful nutrients to our cells. You might be surprised to learn that if you're thirsty, you're already already dehydrated.

"If you're thirsty, you're actually already dehydrated"

So, if you're not a water drinker, try your best. In the event you're not part of the water-loving-crew, here are a few additional ways to stay hydrated and maintain your electrolyte balance (on top of consuming water):

- Coconut water

- Smoothies

- Watermelon

- Celery

- Cucumbers

- Romaine Lettuce.

And if you're still looking for something else after that, then this Watermelon Ginger Juice is made for you!

Fun fact – a family friend of mine was telling me about her Ironman of a brother who visited her in Honduras and ran for 4 hours without drinking any water. I know, wild, right? Instead, he filled up on all of these water-containing foods throughout his stay in Honduras and was able to maintain proper hydration levels. This isn't to say that you should go out and do the same, but it proves the effectiveness of maintaining your hydration levels through both water and various foods.
