In celebration of all the little leprechauns in all the land and all the humans that plan on consuming copious amounts of fun green “adult drinks” today (St. Patrick’s Day), I thought it would be a suitable occasion to whip up something wickedly nourishing and green today (but then again, we all do that everyday, right? … RIGHT?!)
It’s funny how St. Patrick’s Day has changed for me over the years. It used to be one of my favourite holidays to celebrate (and it still is), but over the past few years, I’ve started to do some things a bit differently. Instead of my mornings starting with green beer and cheerios, it now starts with an organic detoxifying green smoothie! It’s for the better – trust me.
This beauty can be thrown together in your blender any time of year, though it may be especially essential on a day like today where you might skip that kale salad at lunch and head straight towards the goodies. I’m respective of 80/20 rules (keeping in mind, that we should always be striving to consuming fresh whole foods and that 80/20 isn’t comprised of processed “health” foods). I feel that any effort towards optimal health is a step in the right direction. Optimal vibrant health doesn’t happen over night and instead, it’s an evolving journey over time. Even the people at their utmost optimal health are still finding ways to refine their diet and that’s what it’s all about. Balance, baby.
Start by mixing in a green smoothie three times a week and see how you feel. Then find something else in your diet/life that you can remove or change, such as refined sugar, gluten or dairy. There’s always room for improvement.
- 2 cups spinach
- 2 stalks of celery
- 3 romaine leaves
- 1 green apple
- 1/2 avocado
- 1/2 lemon, freshly squeezed
- 2 tbsp hemp seeds
- 1/2 cup water or as needed
- 1 tbsp ginger, freshly grated
- Wash all ingredients and cut into small chunks
- Place ingredients into high-speed blender and blend on high for 30 seconds.
- Pour into tall glass jar and enjoy!
